- Greetings.
-
- Another weekly digest of questions and comments from yours truly.
-
- As everyone knows, due to my studies, I usually don't have time to
- access my mail and do any programming except on Friday nights and
- weekends (If you want a fast response to mail sent to me (usu.
- personally), you more than likely to get the fastest response from me
- on the weekend, namely Saturday).
-
- Okay, now it's time to get down to some business.
-
- Firstly, I would like to welcome Laurie Curwood, Garfield Benjamin,
- and I believe Andrew Hawkins on board to the List. I know, I'm not
- the official welcoming committee, but, big deal? Anyhow, greetings!
-
- Secondly, on the issue of "orange screens" in AMOS. Stupid or what?
- Goran testified to the fact that you could use the Interpreter config
- to change the orange color (which is exactly what I did several
- months ago after I got tired of that boring and bright color).
- However, typing from my PC here at the moment, I can't recall whether
- it matters or not if you changed the orange color or not on the
- Interpreter palette when you compile a program (e.g. you change the
- orange to a misty gray, like I did, and compile a program; I can't
- recall as to whether or not AMOS will momentarily bring up an
- grey screen, like you told it in the Editor, or the standard
- default orange screen.) Anyhow, who really cares? If your that scared
- about what someone thinks about what LANGUAGE you program in, then
- DON'T PROGRAM IN THAT LANGUAGE! (Namely, AMOS!)
-
- Personally, I think that AMOS is a wonderful high-level Interpreter
- language that almost anyone can use (Pro being the most
- user-interfacial in my opinion), and if someone is experienced in
- programming, then you can crank out some *ReaLLy* cool programs in
- AMOS, games being the most obvious. Also, another advantage to AMOS
- is that if you ever wanted to port your program to another platform,
- let's say, a PC (*AhhHH*), then you could readily convert the source
- to a language like C or C++ (given the fact that you know the
- language, of course. Goes without saying.)
-
- Ben Crowl remarked on this subject:
- > ..I second that. IMHO if you made it.. then you get to decide
- > whether to show how you did it.. (But personally, if you've made
- > something impressive, show that it is made in amos, like someone
- > else said, and let the Amiga community know that AMOS is better than
- > it's reputation seems to show..
-
- I second that as well. As most of you know, I'm programming a
- *Doom-like* engine (well, who doesn't know by now?) in AMOS, and it
- has come to my attention that Mush has recently being trying his hand
- at writing a raycaster (nice work). It CAN be done, both on the Amiga
- AND in AMOS. I started my 3D engine under the project name..
-
- The Cafe Engine
-
- ..several months ago (conceived last Fall, programming commenced this
- Spring) and it has been coming along. Already breaking the
- limitations of a standard Wolf level, using my own method of
- "modified" raycasting. Much more efficient than standard methods
- (many thanks, btw, go out to Mr. John Bintz for providing some
- pointers on the subject and a some bits of code. Thanks!) Anyways, it
- is coming along, and you'll have to check my newly redone site for
- more details (if you haven't already). But, like I said, it can and
- WILL be done, on, yes the Amiga. And, I'm not a bit ashamed to say
- that I program in AMOS. It's by far the best language for the Amiga.
-
- Btw, the word "Cafe" IS an acronym, however, the actual abbreviated
- words have been undecided, even though Mr. Fyri did have an idea:
-
- > How about Calculation And Figuration Engine?
- Eh, a little too technical, however, I'll keep it in mind.
-
- Well, that's about it. Thanks again for reading.
-
- Long live the Amiga!
